"Most of all, I felt free. Free from trying to be something or someone I could almost pull off, but which I wasn’t completely me. I felt freed from being “professional.” Free from being serious. Free from trying to be elegant when it doesn’t come naturally. ."

I don’t think I’ve felt consistently great about how I look and how I dress for years. The last time I really felt sharp was in my 20s, after a makeover at the Metamorphosis salon in New York transformed me from a somewhat rumpled and disheveled college grad into a more sleek professional woman. They told me I was a Winter and that I should dress in classic styles with edgy details. Which I did with what I thought were decent results.

Fast forward to June of this year where I met Kailash and her daughter Kendall at an event we were attending, and they suggested, maybe (just maybe), it was time for an update.

In July, I headed to Tucson to work with Kailash, in hopes of developing what I think of as “my Superstar Presence.” The first thing I said to her was “Well, the only real disaster would be if you told me I wasn’t a Winter!”

As we talked through the morning, I insisted I related more to the Winter essence, serious, quiet, deep, dramatic. But Kailash kept seeing someone else peeking through, someone playful and impish, full of laughter and movement. She said the palette would tell us what season I really was. The upshot? I am not a Winter, I’m a Spring, a ‘Jubilant Spring’. For style, Kailash recommend I avoid anything too traditional, too serious, too severe. That my clothes be playful, creative, and full of movement.

And then we went shopping! As much fun as it was to shop, some of Kailash’s suggestions were challenging to say the least. I’d try something on and think “oh, this isn’t me” and Kailash would say “I think it’s fabulous!” She pulled things for me to try I’d never have considered before. She pulled shirts with ruffles. Ruffles! She encouraged me to buy a sheer multi-colored long sleeved blouse with crocheted cuffs and neckline. She encouraged me to buy another top splashed with flowers.

Day two we began with hair and make up. In the afternoon, Kailash pulled jewelry from her collection, and we started to put new outfits together using the clothes I’d brought and my new purchases.

The next day the first live meeting of the group I was co- leading began, so I had a chance to immediately try out my new look. The women there had met me before at the June event, and what I heard again and again was “You don’t look like the same person!” I could just feel a difference in how people were responding to me. They seemed to come closer, feel safer, open up more quickly.

I’d insisted to Kailash that I was never the life of the party, but there I was on Saturday night at the hotel bar, regaling a group with my stories. During the weekend when we did some movement and writing work, I set the room laughing with jokes about connecting with “the language of your crotch.” Who is this woman? Not shy, quiet, serious me!

Most of all, I felt free. Free from trying to be something or someone I could almost pull off, but which I wasn’t completely me. I felt freed from being “professional.” Free from being serious. Free from trying to be elegant when it doesn’t come naturally. From being cool and distant. Free to be messy, and wild. And I felt even more reinforcement of the messages I’ve been getting from my Mastermind group: to lighten up, to warm up, to play more, to dance more.

I am falling back in love with how I look, even if I’m not a beauty by conventional measures. I like my green eyes, my chubby cheeks, my smile, and my lips. I like the curve of my waist and hips, my muscular legs. Now, even if I’m just in jeans and T-shirt, I feel good.

Was it worth it? Even if I can’t measure it, I wouldn’t be surprised if I made an extra $20 to $40 thousand dollars this coming year, just because of the way I look, and because of the way people are responding to this new energy embodied in how I present myself. But also, as I told a friend recently, this has been one of the most interesting years of my life. And this piece was one of the most powerful.
